Insider Perspectives on Academic Careers
A course for Master students and PhD Candidates.
“I wish I had known all of this when I was at the beginning of my career!” This is what postdocs who attend my course “Secrets of Academia” as part of the UNISTARTwiss programme tell me again and again.
Therefore, I decided to adapt the content of this course specifically for those who find themselves exactly in this situation: Master students and PhD candidates who are at (or even before) the starting point of their academic careers.
Let’s get one thing out of the way: Without the capacity for quality research you will have no basis for an academic career. Many early stage researchers, however, have this capacity and still only few will have successful careers in academia. So there are other factors at play: social relations, access to networks, institutional power. Successful researchers are aware of these factors and behave accordingly.
Now, you can spend years and years discovering these rules. Or you can attend this course and be prepared for that which will – most definitely – come along your academic way.
“Insider Perspectives on Academic Careers” consists of two four-hour sessions which take place on two consecutive days. We will discuss the following topics:
Session 1 Managing Mentors and Landing a Job
(Dec. 14, 9-13)
How to transform from reproducing student to confident (early stage) researcher
How to get a job in academia
How to manage your (doctoral) supervisors
Session 2 Conferencing and Publishing
(Dec. 15, 9-13)
How to select and get into conferences; how to behave during formal discussions and informal talks
How to publish the right stuff at the right time in the right place.
