Mountain glaciers are among the most sensitive indicators of climate change, contributing significantly to ongoing and future sea-leveI rise, regional freshwater availabitity, and natural hazards. Reliable global-scale projections of their evolution are therefore essential for climate impact assessments, adaptation planning, and climate services. However, producing such projections remains challenging, largely because the observations available to inform global glacier models are still limited. This presentation outlines the recent history of global glacier observation datasets and discusses how they have reshaped the way global glacier models operate, using the 0pen Global Glacier Model as a guiding example, before considering how these models might need to adapt in the future.
