„Snoop, Snitch, Scoop: State Surveillance and Women’s History in Canada”
Abstract: Hollywood has routinely portrayed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) as heroic, friendly do-gooders who always "get their man." When historians discover that the Mounties spied on women's liberation groups in Canada during the Cold War, what can we understand about the relationship between state security, men, women and gender? This presentation is based on documents declassified under Canada's Access to Information Act.
Christabelle Sethna is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Women’s Studies and the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa. She has published widely on sex education, contraception and abortion history. Currently in Graz, she is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS).
