Producing Musical Emotion, from Analysis to Performance: A Case Study of Fauré's Mélodie Spleen
Although many recent research projects consider the relation between performance and analysis, few of them refer to the concept of musical emotion. In his research, Sylvain Caron develops a model that integrates emotion in the different steps of the performance process. Such analysis prior to performance could help performers experiment with different possible interpretations and also define the various characteristics of French mélodies. In the mélodie Spleen, what are the potentialities embodied in musical notation that contribute to the emotional expression of the voice and piano parts? How does the song becomes the expression of the blend emerging from poetry and music? What are the gestures made by performers that aim at conveying musical emotions?
