Panagiotis Stamatis, University of the Aegean: The Greek Education System
Abstract:
Since the Greek state gained independence in 1821, numerous laws and reforms have been enacted regarding the Greek school system, reflecting the many interesting social and historical developments. For about 200 years, various circumstances such as wars, poverty, bankruptcy, political instability, immigration, and government changes have affected the stability of the Greek educational system. As in many other countries around the world, the Greek school system was always affected by social instabilities and political changes, trying to achieve social balance, especially among Greeks, who traditionally invest in their children's education.
This presentation refers to the establishment of preschools, elementary schools and secondary schools based on the main legislative milestones and historical developments from the Greek state's independence to the present day. Moreover, the main reforms and contextual conditions of the system are presented and explained in the context of the national and social situations that led to them. Furthermore, the structure and organization of the system are analyzed in detail, alongside insights into pedagogical practices in Greek schools resulting from system regulations and educational policy priorities over time. The presentation concludes with current discussions and future development perspectives of the Greek school system.
The attendees of this presentation will learn about the sequential and step-by-step formation of the Greek school system, which was influenced not only by national factors, but also by the school systems of Europe (especially Germany) and America, incorporating international principles related to the outcomes of education sciences research.
