Welcome and Introduction: REWI Vice-Dean Prof. Dr. Walter Doralt

Lecture: Land Steiermark Fellow Filippo Morello, PhD

EU Regulation 1503/2020 on European Crowdfunding Service Providers paves the way for an integrated market for crowdfunding by establishing common rules for the sector. It defines crowdfunding as the digital intermediation between the demand for and supply of capital in the form of loans (lending crowdfunding) or debt/equity/hybrid investments (investment crowdfunding) through a digital platform. The regulation excludes from its scope "crowdfunding services [...] provided to project owners that are consumers [...]". Against this background, Filippo Morello examines the relationship between the Regulation and European consumer law. Partly in contrast to the literal scope of application, he will try to show that the new rules on crowdfunding can be understood as an instrument of consumer protection in a broad sense.
