At the initiative of the European Central Bank, the Eurosystem Household Finance
and Consumption Survey (HFCS) collects household-level data on households’ finances and consumption for the Euro area, ensuring for the first time both country-representativeness and international comparability.
The results of the first wave of the HFCS are due to be published in early 2013.
These statistical results are of particular importance in view of the financial crisis, as detailed information on debt, real and financial assets, consumption and saving is provided.
The data will be available free from cost for academic researchers from the ECB.
The aim of the workshop is to present these new microdata to the research community, to compare them to existing data, like the Luxembourg Wealth Study (LWS) database or the German Sozio-oekonomisches Panel (SOEP), and to discuss their significance in view of economic policy and academic research issues, among them wealth inequality, portfolio composition, and housing assets.
