As part of your bachelor’s study programme you will participate in archaeological digs and on-site preparation of finds, both in Austria and abroad, primarily in the Mediterranean region (Greece, Turkey, Cyprus etc.).

You should enjoy studying literature as well as practical work involving anything from a drawing pencil, computer, spade or trowel, to technical equipment such as cameras, total station theodolites, 3D scanners etc. A sense of curiosity, willingness to travel, an interest in languages and a certain amount of visual ability are also an advantage.

About the study programme

Archaeology at the University of Graz

Archaeologists study the history of human civilisation and its material heritage: from the great artworks of antiquity to barely visible traces in the ground. At Graz, the focus is on classical and Roman provincial archaeology (Greek, Roman Italian, the Roman provinces). You will also gain a fundamental understanding of the archaeology of ancient civilisations, prehistory and ancient history, and historical archaeology.

Master’s programme in Archaeology

The master’s programme builds directly on the bachelor’s programme, extending and enhancing your basic knowledge. You must complete a master’s degree before you can undertake independent archaeological fieldwork. At the University of Graz you also have the option of interdisciplinary master’s programmes and joint programmes, allowing further scope for individualised and specialised learning.

Note on Latin/Greek

Knowledge of Latin (10 hours per week in the sixth form or supplementary examination) is required for admission to this bachelor’s programme. Evidence of Greek language skills must be provided for the accompanying course of the bachelor's thesis in the 6th semester (10 hours per week in the sixth form or supplementary examination).
