Wie kann man Krebs besser vorbeugen? Eine Frage, die die Menschen bewegt – und das in großer Zahl. Knapp 600 BesucherInnen kamen am 19. Dezember 2018 an die Universität Graz zum Vortrag des Nobelpreisträgers Harald zur Hausen, den der Forschungsverbund BioTechMed-Graz zur „Nobel Lecture“ eingeladen hatte. Der international anerkannte Forscher hat dazu beigetragen, dass es heute gegen die häufigste Krebsart bei Frauen, den Gebärmutterhalskrebs, einen Impfstoff gibt. 2008 erhielt der deutsche Wissenschafter den Nobelpreis für Medizin. 
Spitzenforschung einem breiten Publikum zugänglich machen – das ist die Intention der Nobel Lecture, wie Rektorin Christa Neuper, zugleich Vorsitzende des Lenkungsausschusses von BioTechMed-Graz, sowie BioTechMed-Graz-Director Rudolf Zechner erläuterten.

Zur Hausen, tätig am Deutschen Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, sprach unter anderem über die Prävention von Krebs und neuartige, mit Krebs zusammenhängende Erkrankungen. So stehen 21 Prozent der Krebserkrankungen mit Infektionen in Zusammenhang. Bei der Vorbeugung spiele, so zur Hausen, das längerfristige Stillen eine Rolle. So gibt es Hinweise, dass eine mehr als sechsmonatige Versorgung mit Muttermilch positive Effekte auf die gestillten Menschen habe. 
Die insgesamt 600 Interessierten verfolgten die Ausführungen nicht nur in der bis auf den letzten Platz gefüllten Aula, sondern auch in zwei Hörsälen, in die der Vortrag übertragen wurde.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
