Chemiker der Uni Graz ist für den Houska-Preis nominiert

Mit einer Gesamtdotierung von 400.000 Euro zählt der Houskapreis der B&C Privatstiftung zu den begehrtesten Forschungsprämien Österreichs. Ass.-Prof. Dr. Toma Glasnov vom Institut für Chemie der Uni Graz ist als Leiter des Christian-Doppler-Labors für Durchflusschemie einer der fünf Nominierten in der Kategorie „Universitäre Forschung“.

Die Durchflusschemie – englisch: Flow Chemistry – ist ein hochaktuelles Gebiet der organischen Chemie, das ForscherInnen an Universitäten wie auch AnwenderInnen in der chemischen Industrie stark beschäftigt. Anstatt in den bisher üblichen Reaktionskesseln sollen sich Reagenzien beim Fließen durch enge Rohre mischen, was eine raschere Synthese mit einer höheren Ausbeute ermöglicht. „Das neue Verfahren ist außerdem umweltschonender, da es mit deutlich weniger Lösungsmitteln und unter großer Energieersparnis durchgeführt werden kann, weil unter anderem die aufwändige Kühlung wegfällt“, unterstreicht Glasnov.

Der Houskapreis fördert wirtschaftsnahe Forschungsprojekte und wird in den Kategorien „Universitäre Forschung“ und „Forschung & Entwicklung in KMU“ vergeben. Die Preisverleihung findet am 28. April 2016 in Wien statt. Die Erstplatzierten aus den beiden Kategorien erhalten jeweils 150.000 Euro Preisgeld, die Plätze zwei bis fünf sind mit je 10.000 Euro dotiert. Darüber hinaus findet heuer erstmalig ein Live-Publikumsvoting statt, dessen GewinnerInnen pro Kategorie zusätzlich zum Preisgeld je 10.000 Euro bekommen.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
