Die Physik nach Higgs

Uni Graz veranstaltet Internationale Physik-Woche in Schladming

Seine Entdeckung revolutionierte die Wissenschaft: Vor etwas mehr als einem Jahr lieferten PhysikerInnen an der Schweizer Forschungsinstitution CERN den Beweis für die Existenz des so genannten Higgs-Teilchens, das vermutlich sämtlicher Materie Masse verleiht. Damit wurde endlich der stichhaltige Beweis für eine mehr als 40 Jahre alte Theorie geliefert, die die kleinsten Bausteine des Universums erklärt. „Durch eine Vielzahl an weiteren Messungen können wir uns mittlerweile sicher sein, dass dieses Teilchen tatsächlich existiert, außerdem ist aus weiteren Experimenten mehr über seine Eigenschaften bekannt“, erklärt der Physiker Univ.-Prof. Dr. Reinhard Alkofer, Sprecher des Forschungsschwerpunkts „Modelle und Simulation“ der Uni Graz. Was diese neuen Erkenntnisse für die Wissenschaft bedeuten, ist Thema bei der vom ihm geleiteten Internationalen Universitätswoche für Theoretische Physik, die von 1. bis 8. März in Schladming stattfindet. Rund 80 Studierende sowie hochrangige ForscherInnen aus aller Welt treffen sich in der Steiermark zu Vorträgen und Workshops. „Durch die Entdeckung verstehen wir viele Aspekte der Kosmologie besser, außerdem bildet sie die Grundlage für neue Theorien, die sich mit der so genannten dunklen Materie im Weltall befassen“, schildert Alkofer.

Around the world in eight stops: the Long Night of Research at the University of Graz

On 24 April from 5 pm, you can take a short trip around the globe at the University of Graz, discovering pecularities of foreign countries or new local features in the entrance hall of the University Library. The itinerary takes you through introduced animal species, political attitudes and the omnipotence of algorithms. There will also be a programme in the historic reading hall, as well as at the UniGraz@Museum and the University Archive.
