The year 2025 brings some changes for students at the University of Graz: for the first time, there are study days at Meerscheinschlössl and the admission deadlines change. The Austrian Student Union (ÖH) election is also on the agenda.

The year 2025 is just around the corner and will bring a number of changes for students at the University of Graz. January will see a premiere: for the first time, there will be study days at Meerscheinschlössl, where everyone can study in peace. Vice-Rector Catherine Walter-Laager emphasises the importance of collaboration: ‘For me, too, learning in pairs was the key to success. And as a university, we want to support students as much as possible during the important learning phases.’

The admission deadlines will also be revised in 2025. ‘We are making the deadlines for registration more compact,’ explains Walter-Laager. For degree programmes with admission procedures, it is also possible to apply during the summer semester. If you are accepted, the offer is then valid for a whole year. All the important information can be found on the website of the admissions office.

In addition to the classic bachelor's and master's programmes, the University of Graz is also offering exciting additional qualifications in the new year. These include, for example, the micro-credential ‘Artificial Intelligence and Society’ or the six modules of the ‘Master's Plus’ programme, which provide skills in important future-oriented topics.

ÖH is elected

The Austrian Student Union (ÖH) election is due to take place again in 2025. Every two years, students elect their representatives. The election is planned for 13 to 15 May 2025, reports Maja Höggerl, ÖH Chairwoman of the University of Graz.

This year, the election of the student representatives is celebrating a special anniversary. Fifty years ago, the university system was fundamentally reformed with the UOG1975. Since then, everyone involved in the scientific community has had a say, including students.

Among other things, students are part of the study commissions that continuously adapt and revise the syllabi of the individual curricula. This guarantees that they correspond to the current state of research. The University Senate, which includes the ÖH representatives, makes the decisions on this. The Senate also has an important vote in the appointment of professors or the election of the rector. In this way, students actively shape the teaching at their university.

By casting their vote in the ÖH election, every student at the University of Graz contributes to the further development of the university.

Complying with the norm: Why Do Standards Shape Our Lives, Elisabeth Staudegger?

Standards determine whether a sheet of paper fits in a printer or whether a charging plug can power multiple devices. These standards shape our everyday lives. But who actually sets these standards? Where are the weaknesses, and how could science help to improve them? Elisabeth Staudegger, Head of the ‘Law and IT’ Department at the Institute for Legal Foundations at the University of Graz, host the Academic Standards Day on 16 June. Here she relays how sciences can contribute to the topic of standardisation and reveals her personal favourite standard.

Survival strategies: How plants respond to drought

According to Geosphere Austria, this spring was the driest in Austria since records began around 170 years ago. The low rainfall put particular pressure on the agricultural sector. And climate change is set to make the situation even worse in the coming decades. We asked Johannes Liesche, a professor at the Department of Biology at the University of Graz, how plants react to water shortages and how they survive periods of drought.
