Jörg Ewald (Freising): Die Bergwälder des Nordalpenrandes sind einem deutlichen Temperaturanstieg (ca. 2°K) bei anhaltend hohen Niederschlägen ausgesetzt. Die Bäume reagieren auf günstigen Böden mit gesteigertem Wachstum, in höheren Lagen steigern selbst Hitzejahre die Jahrringbreiten. Die Höhengrenzen vieler Waldpflanzen und Baumarten steigen deutlich an. Böden unter Bergwald speichern überdurchschnittlich viel Kohlenstoff. Auf ca. 1/10 der Waldfläche gefährdet Humusschwund die Funktions- und Schutzfähigkeit. Historische Kahlschläge und hohe Schalenwildbestände haben vielerorts strukturarme Fichtenreinbestände hinterlassen, die, bislang von größeren Massenvermehrungen des Borkenkäfers verschont, eines vorsorgenden Umbaus zu Mischwald bedürfen, um eine Ausweitung von Sanierungsgebieten zu vermeiden. Spontane Waldsukzession und Aufforstung stehen in einem Spannungsfeld zu Offenland-Naturschutz und Almwirtschaft.
