The main content of the programme includes the fundamentals of American and English literary theory as well as the methods used in literary and cultural studies and linguistics. The study programme will give you a historical overview of the English language, literature and culture in different parts of the world and teach you how to handle various media at an academic level.
Master’s programme in English Studies/American Studies
The master’s programme in English Studies/American Studies builds directly on the bachelor’s programme, broadening and intensifying the knowledge and skills already acquired. At the University of Graz you also have the option of interdisciplinary master’s programmes and joint programmes, allowing further scope for individualised and specialised learning.

Being a graduate of the bachelor’s programme will enable you to take on career roles that involve language, text, communication or culture in any form. This includes jobs in communication management, culture management and policy, information and knowledge management, adult and continuing education as well as media, journalism, advertising and politics.
During your bachelor’s studies you will need to show evidence of Latin language skills (10 hours per week in the sixth form or supplementary examination). This is required to be able to take the course "Development of English" in the 4th semester.
