Art History at the University of Graz

The degree programme regards images and art as independent forms of knowledge and explores their significance for society and culture. However, the programme also focuses on contemporary perspectives such as gender studies, postcolonialism and visual culture, extending far beyond the traditional concept of art – a feature that sets Graz apart from more traditional art history degree programmes.

About the degree programme

During your degree, you will explore the main art forms and art-historical methods used to analyse works of art. Theories from the fields of feminism, postcolonialism and media theory demonstrate that art science is far more than simply viewing works of art. Museology and heritage conservation are also topics covered on the course.

Further studies

The Master’s programme in Art History builds directly on the Bachelor’s programme, broadening and intensifying the knowledge and skills already acquired. Starting in the fall of 2026, there will also be a completely new interdisciplinary master’s program in Musicology and Aesthetics of the Audiovisual Arts. At the University of Graz you also have the option of interdisciplinary master’s programmes and joint programmes, allowing further scope for individualised and specialised learning.

Career prospects

Graduates of the Bachelor’s programme can be found in both the public and private sectors of the labour market. You could work, for example, in museums and exhibitions, the art trade, libraries, archives, newspapers and publishing, or in heritage conservation, urban development, the leisure industry and tourism, or in general administration and (cultural) policy. There are also career opportunities in the media sector, cultural management or business.

Note on Latin

Proof of Latin proficiency (10 hours per week in high school or a supplementary exam) must be provided during the course of study. This is a prerequisite for the conservatory’s “Bachelor’s Thesis Supervision” program.
