Eröffnung des NAWI Graz Central Labs Gracia

Auf das Sortieren und Analysieren von Zellen, sowie die Archivierung umfangreicher Analysedaten ist das NAWI Graz Central Lab ‚Graz Cell Analyses and Informatics, kurz „Gracia“  ausgerichtet, das am 19.11.2014 im ZMB feierlich aus der Taufe gehoben wurde. Geleitet wird dieses NAWI Graz Central Lab von Dr. Tobias Eisenberg (Institut für Molekulare Biowissenschaften, Uni Graz) und Dr. Harald Pichler (Institut für Molekulare Biotechnologie, TU Graz).

 

Ausgestattet mit modernsten Zell-Analysegerät und einem high-end Zell-Sortiergerät können unterschiedlichste Fluoreszenz-basierte Analysen wie auch Sortierungen auf technisch höchstem Niveau durchgeführt werden. Dank eines High-Throughput-Sampling Systems können Zellproben äußerst rasch im Hochdurchsatz gemessen werden. Das Central Lab bietet außerdem die Nutzungsmöglichkeit eines Probenvorbereitungslabors, sowie Geräte zur Zellkultur von Mikroorganismen. Diese sind insbesondere auf eine Kultivierung und Probenaufbereitung im 96-well Maßstab ausgelegt und ermöglichen damit Fluoreszenz-basierte Screenings. In seinem Einführungsvortrag unterstrich Tobias Eisenberg die gute etablierte Kooperation der Biowissenschaften und freut sich auf neue Kollaborationen. Die Infrastruktur kann auch für andere Fächer sehr interessant sein, da über Zellen hinaus auch andere Partikel ähnlicher Größe untersucht werden können.

 

Renate Dworczak und Bernhard Hofmann-Wellenhof betonten im Rahmen ihrer Einführung, wie wichtig Kooperation ist: „NAWI Graz ist nach der gut gemeisterten Einführung gemeinsamer Bachelor- und Masterstudien einen großen Schritt weitergegangen. Denn gerade in der Forschung ist Kooperation unerlässlich, da so große Geräte nur mit vereinten Kräften angeschafft werden können. Mit solchen Erfolgen im Gepäck können die beiden Universitäten gut gewappnet mit dem Ministerium verhandeln.“

In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
