Handbuch zur Ökolinguistik präsentiert

Den Klimawandel in Worte fassen, Umweltprobleme bewältigen oder verschleiern, Minderheiten eine Stimme geben: Wie sehr die Sprache unser Umfeld beeinflusst und umgekehrt beeinflusst wird, erforscht die Ökolinguistik. Ein führender Vertreter dieses Wissenschaftszweigs, Alwin Fill vom Institut für Anglistik der Uni Graz, und seine Kollegin Hermine Penz haben in Auftrag des renommierten Routledge-Verlages ein Handbuch als bisher umfassendste Einführung in das Fach herausgegeben. Der auf Englisch verfasste Band, zu dem 30 AutorInnen aus aller Welt beigetragen haben, wurde diese Woche an der Uni Graz präsentiert.

„Die Karl-Franzens-Universität hat sich das Thema Nachhaltigkeit an die Fahnen geheftet, unsere Forschung ist ein wesentlicher Beitrag dazu“, betont Fill. Das fast 500 Seiten starke Buch behandelt Themen wie Sprachkontakt und Minderheitensprachen und zeigt den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Verlust von sprachlicher und biologischer Vielfalt auf. Weiters thematisiert es die Beschreibung des Klimawandels, die sprachliche Darstellung unseres Umgangs mit Tieren oder die Rolle der Sprache bei der Verschleierung und Bewältigung von Umweltproblemen.

“HeinrichBiCool”: University of Graz demonstrates the effects of green facades and roofs

The University of Graz has launched a pioneering project at the University Centre for Theology. Its name, “HeinrichBiCool”, says it all: a comprehensive system of green facades and roof will cool the building at Heinrichstraße 80 during the summer. At the same time, this will create a new habitat for plants and animals, helping to increase biodiversity. The accompanying monitoring programme will provide detailed data on the impact of the measures on indoor climate, energy consumption and biodiversity. The findings will lay a scientifically sound foundation for further projects aimed at making cities sustainable, climate-resilient and liveable. The partners in this project, funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), are AEE INTEC – Institute for Sustainable Technologies, Technisches Büro Siegfried Stark, the landscape architecture and urban planning firm “studio boden”, and Ökoteam Graz.
