Zypern: Mittelmeerinsel und Paradies für ArchäologInnen war Mittelpunkt eines Workshops

Für viele eine traumhafte Urlaubsinsel im Mittelmeer, für andere ein Forschungsgegenstand par excellence: Zypern. An der Universität Graz beschäftigt sich das Institut für Archäologie mit diesem Land und dessen Geschichte und forscht zur antiken Plastik und zur antiken Keramik. Ein Workshop, der am 16. Juni 2016 in Graz stattfand, zog WissenschafterInnen und Zypern-Experten aus ganz Österreich an. Die Vortrags-Themen reichten dabei von antiken Vasen udn Keramik bis hin zu Marmorplastiken und Unterwasserarchäologie.

Peter Scherrer, selbst Leiter des Instituts und auch Vizerektor für Forschung und Nachwuchsförderung an der Uni Graz, sprach in seinen einleitenden Worten die wissenschaftliche Leistung des Insituts "im Schwerpunkt "Zypern" besonders an. Mit dem Montanisten Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Walter Prochaska war ein Experte für Marmor nach Graz gekommen, der über die Vorkommen und Nutzung von Marmor on der Antike referierte. Höhepunkt des Workshops war die Präsentation des neuen Buches "CSIR Österreich IV,3. Die Grabstelen und Grabaltäre des Stadtgebiets von Flavia Solva. Unter der Mitarbeit von Ortlof Harl, Susanne Lamm und Margaretha Pochmarski-Nagele" im Gipsmuseum.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
