Der christlich-muslimische Dialog steht im Mittelpunkt einer Sommerschule an der Universität Graz

„Empathie, Verständnis, Solidarität und Toleranz“ forderte Theologie-Dekan Christoph Heil im Umgang mit dem Islam ein. Die Sommerschule „Muslimische und christliche Theologinnen und Theologen im Gespräch“, die er am 18. September mit diesen Worten eröffnete, sei ein wichtiger universitärer Beitrag gegen die populistische Vereinfachung. Auch Vizerektor Martin Polaschek betonte, dass der fundierte wissenschaftliche Austausch umso bedeutsamer werde, „je lauter, oberflächlicher und verantwortungsloser“ die Politik agiere.
Die Sommerschule, federführend organisiert von Reinhold Esterbauer, ist eine Kooperation der Katholisch-Theologischen sowie der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Graz mit den Islamische Studien, Rechtswissenschaften und der Katholisch-Theologischen Fakultät der Franziskaner in Sarajevo. Den Auftakt-Workshop gestaltete Barbara Frischmuth mit Auszügen aus ihrem Werk „Das Verschwinden des Schattens in der Sonne“, das vor wenigen Jahren auch auf Bosnisch erschien. Sie diskutierte mit den Studierenden auch Texte des bosnischen Schriftstellers Dzevad Karahasan, der aufgrund eines Todesfalls in der Familie kurzfristig absagen musste. „Literatur und Kunst können einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Befreiung von Vorurteilen und dem Erkennen der Wirklichkeit leisten“, begrüßte Heil diesen Programmpunkt.
Weitere Themen der Sommerschule sind – brandaktuell – der Religionsunterricht in pluralen Gesellschaften, Gottesbeweise in Christentum und Islam sowie ein Vergleich der politischen Systeme in Österreich und Bosnien-Herzegowina. Dazu gibt es auch praktische Einblicke bei Besuchen im Bischöflichen Gymnasium, im Dom und in einer Moschee.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
