Planungen für das Großprojekt laufen auf Hochtouren und sind im Zeitplan

Bis zum Frühjahr 2019 erhält die Universitätsbibliothek Graz (UB) sowohl ein völlig neues Kleid als auch moderne Funktionen. Die Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG) und die Karl-Franzens-Universität erneuern den zentralen Wissensspeicher der Universität. Das Grazer Architekturbüro Atelier Thomas Pucher ZT GmbH gewann im Vorjahr den europaweiten Architekturwettbewerb. Das Konzept betrachtet erstmalig die Gebäudeteile mit mehr als 10.000 Quadratmetern als eine Einheit. Dazu wird der gesamte Komplex rund um den denkmalgeschützten Lesesaal völlig neu gestaltet und um einen großen Hörsaal, ein Studierenden-Service-Center sowie zusätzliche Lernplätze erweitert. Ausgehend vom Siegerkonzept wurde das Projekt zwischen Architekt, Bauträger und NutzerInnen in den vergangenen Monaten weiterentwickelt, so dass am 24. Februar 2016 der Vorentwurf präsentiert wurde. „Ein markantes Bauprojekt außerhalb des Bauleitplans“, unterstrich Peter Riedler, Vizerektor für Finanzen, Ressourcen und Standortentwicklung.

Raumkonzept
Der architektonische Entwurf von Thomas Pucher ist gleichgeblieben, verändert hat sich zum Teil das Raumkonzept. „Durch diverse Zubauten ist in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten ein gordischer Knoten entstanden, den wir lösen konnten“, fasste Pucher zusammen.
Der Status quo sieht wie folgt aus: Der Hörsaal mit 430 Plätzen wird aus Kosten- und Effizienzgründen anstatt im Tiefgeschoß im „alten Magazin“ Platz finden. „Das lichtdurchflutete Foyer zwischen Hauptgebäude und Bibliothek wird zu einem multifunktionellen Raum, der für Veranstaltungen nutzbar sein wird“, so Ralph Zettl, Direktor für Ressourcen und Planung.

Ersatzquartiere
Zusätzlich zum Bau selbst ist die begleitende Logistik ein Großprojekt. „Die Hauptbibliothek mit dem Lesesaal wird voraussichtlich im August schließen“, erklärt Bibliotheksleiter Werner Schlacher. Der Baustart mit dem Abbruch des 1970er-Gebäudes ist im Frühjahr 2017 geplant, davor werden die Demontagearbeiten durchgeführt.
Die administrativen UB-Bereiche werden im Sommer in die Paulustorgasse 15 siedeln. Die Adresse ist bekannt, nutzte doch bereits das Institut für Sportwissenschaft die Räumlichkeiten während der Sanierung des Gebäudes Mozartgasse 14 als Ersatzquartier. Andere Abteilungen, darunter Digitalisierung und Sondersammlung, werden in die Weinzöttlstraße 16, wo sich bereits die Depotbibliothek befindet, ausweichen. Die Ausleihe und eine abgespeckte Lehrbuchsammlung werden in Containern beim RESOWI-Zentrum untergebracht. „Das gewährleistet die Anbindung an die direkt benachbarten Magazine und die Aufrechterhaltung wichtiger Services auf dem Campus“, betont Schlacher. Die Studien- und Prüfungsabteilung, die als Teil des Studierenden-Service-Center in den sogenannten Domenig-Bau der UB einzieht, prüft noch die Ersatzquartiere.  

uni.talk zur Infrastruktur am 27. April
Die Erweiterung der Bibliothek stellt in den kommenden Jahren das zentrale Bauprojekt der Uni Graz dar. Zusätzlich stehen weitere Vorhaben zur Modernisierung der Infrastruktur am Start, darunter die Sanierung der Labors in der Heinrichstraße 28, zusätzliche Labors in der Beethovenstraße sowie die Nachnutzung der Medizinischen Uni-Gebäude, die mit der Vorklinik und anderen Gebäude neue Chancen eröffnen.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
