Menschenrechtspreis 2011: Daniel Barenboim und Rektorin Christa Neuper

Daniel Barenboim, Menschenrechtspreisträger der Uni Graz 2011, dirigiert das Neujahrskonzert 2014

Daniel Barenboim, weltberühmter Dirigent und Pianist, wurde 2011 der Menschenrechtspreis der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz verliehen. Am 1. Jänner 2014 wird der Künstler und Friedensstifter, das traditionsreiche Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker dirigieren.
„Maestro Daniel Barenboim ist Vorbild und Wegweiser in den Bemühungen, Gräben zwischen Völkern zu überwinden, und leistet mit seiner künstlerischen und politischen Arbeit einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Aussöhnung im Nahen Osten“, begründete Rektorin Christa Neuper am 21. Oktober 2011 die Auszeichnung des herausragenden Musikers mit dem Menschenrechtspreis der Karl-Franzens-Universität. In dem von Barenboim gemeinsam mit dem palästinensischen Literaturwissenschafter Edward Said gegründeten West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, bringt der Künstler seit 1999 junge MusikerInnen aus Israel, den palästinensischen Autonomiegebieten, Ägypten, dem Libanon und anderen arabischen Ländern zusammen.

Der 1992 ins Leben gerufene Menschenrechtspreis der Karl-Franzens-Universität wird in unregelmäßigen Abständen vergeben. Der Preis zeichnet Menschen aus, die hervorragende Leistungen für Freiheit, Gerechtigkeit und Frieden im Sinne der Menschenrechte erbracht haben und damit der Universität als Vorbilder dienen.

  • Simon Wiesenthal, Gründer des Jüdischen Dokumentationszentrums (1994)
  • Vera Jovanovic, Branka Raguz und Esad Muhibic, Ombudsleute der Föderation Bosnien-Herzegowina (1997)
  • Dalai Lama, Friedensnobelpreisträger (2002)
  • Council for the Assistance to Refugee Academics (CARA); die Organisation mit Sitz in London setzt sich seit den 1930er-Jahren für akademische Flüchtlinge ein (2007)

Nobel Lecture 2025: How evolution enters chemistry

During the Nobel Lecture at BioTechMed-Graz, Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry Frances H. Arnold provided insight into her research on the directed evolution of enzymes.
