University of Graz: Discover the apprentice game and secure jobtraining

A person stands in an office or workroom and stretches one arm forward to hold a smartphone up to the camera. The smartphone displays a colourful user interface with the yellow ‘UNI GRAZ’ logo, the words ‘Courage: Solution’ and a button labelled ‘Start game now!’. The person is wearing a dark T-shirt with several stylised panda bear motifs. In the background, a desk with a computer, shelves and other office furniture can be seen. ©Uni Graz/Angele

The University of Graz not only educates students – it also offers apprenticeships in eight future-oriented professions – even with a school-leaving certificate if desired! From metal technology in the physics workshop to IT systems engineering: discover apprenticeships now and immerse yourself in the world of university apprentices with an interactive game.

The University of Graz is not only an educational institution for around 30,000 students, it also trains young people in eight exciting apprenticeship professions. Whether in the laboratory, in the office or outdoors in the countryside, the choice of professions is diverse. And, of course, you can also complete your apprenticeship with a school-leaving certificate at the University of Graz.

"The work in the physics laboratory at the University of Graz is really very varied," says Laura Losbichler. She is completing her apprenticeship as a metal technician here and will soon finish her training. "Here you also learn things that you don't see anywhere else." Whether it's complex experimental setups or craft methods that are no longer taught anywhere else.

"We manufacture individual parts for scientific experiments here. Sometimes the researchers come to us because something breaks during an experiment. Then we have to repair it quickly." In any case, it was the right decision for her, says the aspiring technician. Losbichler particularly appreciates the University of Graz as a training provider because of the good atmosphere. "You are given a really warm welcome here, working with the team is very informal and I get a lot of support."

Apprentice game

School pupils can now explore the diversity of tasks at a large university in a fun way with the interactive apprentice game from the University of Graz. Players take on the role of an apprentice. On their very first day at work, there is a laboratory accident, nanobots escape and paralyse everyone on campus. Only the apprentices can save the university now. No download necessary: just open it in your browser and get started. Try it out now!

The University of Graz is currently looking for young, motivated people again. Apply now for the open apprenticeships in these professions: archive, library and information assistant, electronics technician in communications electronics, finance and accounting assistant, horticultural worker, information technology systems engineer, laboratory technician, metal technician in mechanical engineering and administrative assistant. You can find more information here.

Mild Research Night: Around 750 visitors travelled around the world at the university

Lovely weather and a wide range of research topics drew visitors to the University of Graz last Friday. Highlights included a journey around the globe in eight stops, a ‘speed-dating’ session with books, insights into Alfred Wegener’s Greenland expedition, and guided tours of the democracy exhibition at the UniGraz@Museum.

Career Booster: How the Research Careers Campus supports researchers

They are innovative, creative and productive – researchers who have not yet been appointed to a professorship make a massive contribution to a university’s research output. To provide them with even better support on their career path, the University of Graz has established the Research Careers Campus. The official launch took place on 22 April 2026 with a ‘festival’.

Greenery on the rise: over 500 new flowers, perennials and shrubs on campus

Bright blooms and fresh greenery make our hearts beat faster in spring. But it is not just us humans who delight in this colourful growth. For many animals, this splendour provides, above all, food and habitat. There has recently been an increase in this on the University of Graz campus. More than 500 native flowers, perennials and shrubs have been planted on strips of fallow land around Universitätsplatz 2.

Building biological bridges: Chemist discovers an ecological tool for the pharmaceutical industry

Building a relationship on a solid foundation is also important in chemistry. To produce medicines, disinfectants or plant protection products, stable bonds between carbon atoms must be formed. Conventional chemical methods rely on environmentally harmful reagents and solvents to carry out the desired reaction. This process also produces unusable by-products. Chemist Lilla Gal has discovered an enzyme that enables the same process to take place efficiently and sustainably. The results of her research were recently published in the prestigious journal Angewandte Chemie.
