Kunsthistoriker Julian Blunk ist Ideologien in Kunst und Architektur auf der Spur

Wie werden Bauwerke zu einem ideologischen Statement? Oder die Werke und Lebensläufe prominenter Künstler:innen in Spielfilmen politisch vereinnahmt? Die Instrumentalisierung von Kunst ist ein facettenreiches Thema, zu dem Julian Blunk forscht. Er ist seit Mai 2022 Professor für Kunstgeschichte vom 18. bis 20. Jahrhundert an der Universität Graz.

Filme mit Färbung
Was den Wissenschaftler aktuell besonders interessiert, ist die ideologische Vereinnahmung von Kunst und Architektur im Spielfilm, so etwa in „Andreas Schlüter“ aus dem Jahr 1942. Der bedeutende deutsche Barockbildhauer und -baumeister wurde 1694 von Kurfürst Friedrich III. an dessen Hof in Berlin berufen. „Im propagandistischen Film der Nazis wird Schlüter zu einer Führergestalt, die sich unter anderem gegen ein nicht näher bestimmtes Franzosentum auflehnt. Mit der historischen Wahrheit hat das kaum noch etwas zu tun. Vielmehr handelt es sich um eine ideologische Interpretation, die allerdings recht geschickt so tut, als wäre sie keine“, schildert Julian Blunk.
Analysiert hat der Forscher auch den DDR-Film „Goya“, der ebenfalls stark politisch gefärbt ist. „Der Regisseur macht aus dem Maler Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) eine Figur, die sich auf die Seite des Arbeiter- und Bauernstands schlägt, was dem historischen Künstler nur bedingt gerecht wird“, so Blunk.

Bauwerke mit Bekenntnis
Die Neuauflage von Architekturstilen im 19. Jahrhundert und die damit verbundenen Ideen sind ein weiterer Schwerpunkt in Blunks Forschung. Ob Neugotik, Neobarock oder Neorenaissance: „Grundsätzlich ging es immer darum, einen Stil zur sozialen, nationalen oder konfessionellen Identitätsbildung in Anspruch zu nehmen, in der Regel exklusiv“, sagt der Kunsthistoriker. Wenn etwa der Barock als Kunst des Absolutismus galt, gerieten Neobarock-Gebäude häufig zu entsprechenden politischen Bekenntnissen, zur Monarchie oder zur Restauration.
„Goethe indes hatte in seinem Aufsatz ,Von deutscher Baukunst‘ 1773 die Gotik zum ,altdeutschen Styl‘, also zum nationalen Erbe erklärt, was zumindest in Deutschland lange Zeit ohne Widerspruch blieb“, bringt der Wissenschaftler ein anderes Beispiel für dieses identitätsstiftende Potenzial. „Die Vollendung des Kölner Doms im Stil der Neugotik war entsprechend ein Symbol der deutschen Reichseinigung.“
Gleichzeitig hatte der Historismus schon in den eigenen Reihen ungezählte Kritiker:innen, die in den Neo-Stilen, mal abhängig, mal unabhängig von deren ideologischer Vereinnahmung, nur blutleere Gespenster ihrer historischen Vorbilder erkannten.

Julian Blunk hat in Bochum studiert, in Dresden, Paris und zuletzt an verschiedenen Universitäten in Berlin gelehrt und geforscht. Graz ist für ihn in kultureller Hinsicht sehr attraktiv, „weil die Stadt ein ungeheuer reiches historisches Erbe und eine äußerst lebendige Kulturszene zu bieten hat. Dank ihrer besonderen Nähe zu mehreren Nachbarstaaten, Landschafts- und Kulturräumen ist sie ein hochinteressanter Schmelztiegel und somit in jeder Hinsicht lebenswert.“

Austria’s emissions rose in 2025: University of Graz researchers analyse the causes

The Environment Agency Austria has today published the figures for the country’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2025. While emissions fell sharply year on year from 2022 to 2024, they rose again by just under 0.7 per cent in 2025. Researchers at the University of Graz have analysed how much of this increase was due to structural changes in the economy and how much was attributable to external factors over which there is little control. “In 2025, the colder winter compared with 2024 increased emissions by 0.81 per cent, while the weak economy reduced them by 0.38 per cent. If we factor out these influences, we find an underlying increase of 0.26 per cent compared with the previous year,” reports economist Karl Steininger. “This clearly means that Austria is not on track to meet its climate targets, which require a substantial reduction in emissions by 2030.”

Electrifying: Researchers film the first moments on the way from light to electricity

Physicists at the University of Graz (Austria), in collaboration with colleagues from Marburg University and Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany), have achieved a scientific breakthrough. For the first time, the generation of electrical energy from light has been filmed and described theoretically. This work is of far-reaching significance, not least for optimising sustainable energy production from photovoltaics. This is because it provides fundamental building blocks for understanding the physical processes that take place, for example, in organic solar cells. The paper was published in the journal Physical Review X, one of the world’s most prestigious physics journals.
