Mathematiker Karl Kunisch erhält hochdotierten Preis des Europäischen Forschungsrates

Der Advanced Grant des European Research Councils ERC ist eine der bedeutendsten und höchst dotierten Förderprämien in der europäischen Spitzenforschung. O.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Karl Kunisch vom Institut für Mathematik und Wissenschaftliches Rechnen der Uni Graz wird mit einer solchen geehrt.
„Der Advanced Grant stärkt unseren Schwerpunkt Modelle und Simulationen und zeigt einmal mehr, dass die Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz in der obersten Liga der internationalen Forschung vertreten ist“, betont Rektorin Christa Neuper.

Der ERC fördert das Projekt „From Open to Closed Loop Optimal Control of PDEs“, in dessen Rahmen Kunisch sich der optimalen Steuerung von partiellen Differenzialgleichungen widmet. Dieses ist eines der zukunftsträchtigsten Themen der Mathematik. Die dabei entwickelten Methoden kommen immer dann zum Einsatz, wenn bestimmte Systeme optimal gesteuert werden sollen – etwa im Biomedical Engineering.
Das Vorhaben ist auf fünf Jahre angelegt und wird zu einem Teil auch am Radon Institut der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften umgesetzt, wo der Mathematiker eine Forschungsgruppe leitet.
