US-Präsident Trump als Thema des ersten Politik Café Spezial

Die ganze Welt spricht über ihn. Über seine Politik, seine Provokationen und das grundsätzliche Phänomen. US-Präsident Donald Trump steht im Mittelpunkt der öffentlichen Diskussion – so auch bei einem „Politik Café Spezial“ an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, zu dem am 30. Jänner 2018 neben der 7. fakultät die Österreichisch-Amerikanische Gesellschaft Steiermark und die US-Botschaft in Wien geladen hatten.

Auf dem Podium unter der Leitung von Rechtswissenschafter Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Markus Steppan, Gastgeber der Reihe „Politik Café“, nahmen Platz: Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Roberta Maierhofer, Leiterin des Zentrums für Inter-Amerikanische Studien, Peter Rough, gebürtiger Österreicher und Berater der Republikanischen Partei in den USA, der austro-amerikanischer Wirtschaftsanwalt Kurt A. Wagner sowie Dr. Stefan Rabitsch von der Österreichisch-Amerikanischen Gesellschaft Steiermark.
Dass das Handeln von Donald Trump polarisiert, bestätigte auch die rege Debatte auf dem Podium sowie die anschließenden Fragen des Publikums. „Die neue Steuerreform erzeugt viel Optimismus, viele Vorschriften wurden abgeschafft“, erklärte Peter Rough die Stärke von Trumps Politik. „Doch wem nützt das“, fragte Roberta Maierhofer, „nur die Unternehmen profitieren davon.“ Die Amerikanistin zeigte sich überaus skeptisch, dass auch die BürgerInnen einen Vorteil davon hätten. „Es führt eher zu einem patriachalischen System, das davon ausgeht, dass die UnternehmerInnen für ihre ArbeiterInnen sorgen.“
Als größten Fehler Trumps gestand US-Politikberater Rough den Umgang mit den rechtsextremen Ausschreitungen in Charlottesville ein. Auch hier konterte Maierhofer: „Die langhaltende Diskriminierung wird nach wie vor zur Seite gewischt, weil in den USA das Erfolgsnarrativ im Mittelpunkt steht.“ Es brauche Strukturen, die eine Gleichbehandlung der Ethnien ermöglichen, auch Bildung, so der Tenor der DiskutantInnen, sei ein zentraler Faktor.

Zusätzlich zum bekannten Politik Café im Grazer Café Promenade wird es künftig in Kooperation mit anderen Institutionen in unregelmäßigen Abständen ein „Politik Café Spezial“ an unterschiedlichen Veranstaltungsorten geben. Die Reihe ist Teil der 7. fakultät, des Zentrums für Gesellschaft, Wissen und Kommunikation der Uni Graz.

The University of Graz is further expanding its international study opportunities through the European university alliance Arqus and is taking the lead in two key projects. In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
