Neue Struktur für BioTechMed-Graz

Director Rudolf Zechner und Co-Director Peter Holzer ab 1. Jänner 2016 im Amt

Der Schulterschluss Karl-Franzens-Universität, TU Graz und Med Uni Graz in „BioTechMed-Graz“ hat Forschungen zur Gesundheit am Wissenschaftsstandort Graz weltweit sichtbarer gemacht. Erfolgreiche Beispiele dafür sind die Eröffnung des NIKON Center of Excellence, die Besetzung gemeinsamer Professuren sowie die Gründung des Omics Center.

Nach der gelungenen Aufbauarbeit der vergangenen vier Jahre will der Forschungsverbund seine internationale Wirkung weiter erhöhen. Dazu wird ab 1. Jänner 2016 auch eine organisatorische Neustrukturierung beitragen. Das Direktorium, bestehend aus Director und Co-Director, wird die bisherigen drei Koordinatoren ablösen und für die strategische Ausrichtung sowie die Profilbildung der Kooperation zuständig sein. Für die Position konnten zwei international anerkannte Forscher gewonnen werden. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rudolf Zechner, Institut für Molekulare Biowissenschaften an der Uni Graz, übernimmt die Funktion als Director, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Peter Holzer, Institut für Experimentelle und Klinische Pharmakologie an der Med Uni, jene als Co-Director. Des Weiteren zählt das Direktorium die Budgetplanung, die Erstellung eines Jahresprogramms sowie die Vertretung von BioTechMed-Graz nach Außen und innerhalb der Universitäten zu seinen Aufgaben.

Das Lenkungskomitee ist das oberste Gremium und wird sich aus neun Mitgliedern – den RektorInnen, jeweils einem Mitglied des Universitätsrates und je einer Vizerektorin/einem Vizerektor der drei Partneruniversitäten – zusammensetzen. Das Lenkungskomitee steuert den langfristigen Entwicklungsprozess und die strategische Ausrichtung von BioTechMed-Graz über die jeweilige Leistungsvereinbarungsperiode hinaus. Das Lenkungskomitee unterstützt die Integration von BioTechMed-Graz in den Partneruniversitäten. Die Mitglieder des Lenkungskomitees wiederum wählen aus ihrer Mitte einen dreiköpfigen Exekutivausschuss (eine Person pro Universität).

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
