Digitale Herzen, unsichtbare Bakterien, eingepflanzte Strahlen: Grazer Universitäten fördern sechs wissenschaftliche Projekte mit 3,7 Millionen Euro

Wie uns technische Lösungen vor Krankheiten schützen können, ist das gemeinsame Thema von sechs wissenschaftlichen Projekten an drei Grazer Universitäten. Die Universität Graz, TU Graz und Med Uni Graz fördern im Rahmen ihrer Kooperation BioTechMed-Graz die Forschungen mit rund 3,7 Millionen Euro.

Elias Karabelas, Institut für Mathematik und Wissenschaftliches Rechnen, Uni Graz:

Herz-Patient:innen eine personalisierte Therapie bieten: Das soll dank maschinellem Lernen möglich werden. Der Computerwissenschafter Elias Karabelas erforscht, wie virtuelle Nachbildungen des Herzens dazu beitragen können, maßgeschneiderte Behandlungen zu finden.

Linda Waldherr, Lehrstuhl für medizinische Physik und Biophysik, Med Uni Graz

Die klassische Chemotherapie tötet nicht nur Tumorzellen, sondern schädigt auch das Immunsystem. Die Biochemikerin Linda Waldherr entwickelt deshalb ein Implantat, das eine lokal exakt ansteuerbare Chemobehandlung ermöglicht und die Wirkung von Immuntherapien verstärkt.

Mahmoud Abdellatif, Klinische Abteilung für Kardiologie, Med Uni Graz

Von einer Herzschwäche spricht man, wenn sich der Muskel nicht mehr richtig zusammenziehen oder mit Blut füllen kann. Der Kardiologe Mahmoud Abdellatif erforscht, wie Fehlregulationen in Herzmuskelzellen zu dieser Erkrankung beitragen können.

Kann die Kombination aus erhöhtem Vitamin B3-Stoffwechsel und körperlicher Aktivität das Risiko für Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen und Typ II-Diabetes senken? Das will das Konsortium INTERACD+ unter der Leitung von Simon Sedej herausfinden.

Daniel Kracher, Institut für Molekulare Biotechnologie, TU Graz

Wie können sich krankmachende Mikroorganismen vor dem Immunsystem verstecken? Das will der Biochemiker Daniel Kracher am Beispiel des Cholera-Erregers herausfinden. Konkret untersucht er eine Art von Eiweißmolekülen, die es Bakterien erlaubt, „unsichtbar“ zu werden.

Horst Lechner, Institut für Biochemie, TU Graz

Horst Lechner beschäftigt sich mit dem gezielten Design von Enzymen, die danach bestimmte Eigenschaften besitzen sollen. Der Biochemiker nutzt Deep-Learning-Methoden, um die Bindestellen von einem Enzym in das aktive Zentrum eines anderen zu implantieren. So können Eiweißmoleküle für spezielle biochemische Anwendungen, wie etwa das Scheiden von Proteinen an spezifischen Stellen, designt werden.

A fresh start, a calling, holidays: what draws people from other career paths to teaching

They used to develop software; now they teach maths in the classroom. Career changers are expected to help address the shortage of qualified teachers in Austria’s schools. In their doctoral theses at the Institute for Educational Research and Teacher Training at the University of Graz, Melanie Gürentz and Claudia Mair examined how these new teachers perceive their new professional roles.

Talent Talks bridge the gap in career guidance

The Styrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO Steiermark), the Styrian Chamber of Labour (AK Steiermark) and the AMS are joining forces when it comes to training young people and, through the “Talent Talks”, are creating a seamless pathway to career guidance. This takes preparation and follow-up support – just in time for the start of the term and the scheme’s tenth anniversary – to a whole new level. A new survey conducted by the Talent Centre among 2,687 former participants to mark the anniversary shows just how important this development is. Of the young people who received follow-up support from the Talent Report, 74.6 per cent stated that they had a good understanding of their own strengths and talents following the Talent Check. Without follow-up support, the figure was 66.5 per cent – a significant difference of 8.1 percentage points.
