Forscher des Wegener Center sehen dringenden Handlungsbedarf für Österreich

Damit das Mindestziel des Pariser Klimaschutzabkommens – die Begrenzung des Temperaturanstiegs auf deutlich unter 2° Celsius – erreicht werden kann, dürfen nach derzeitigem Wissensstand bis 2050 weltweit nur mehr rund 800 Milliarden Tonnen CO2 emittiert werden. Im Auftrag der Initiative MUTTER ERDE haben Forscher des Wegener Center für Klima und Globalen Wandel der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz nun erstmals berechnet, was das für Österreich bedeutet: Unter Berücksichtigung von Fairnessüberlegungen steht unserem Land von 2017 bis zur Mitte dieses Jahrhunderts ein Budget von lediglich 1 000 bis 1 500 Millionen Tonnen CO2-Äquivalenten zur Verfügung, zeigen Ökonom Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Karl Steininger und Philosoph Univ.-Prof. Dr. Lukas Meyer in ihrer Studie auf, die heute bei einer Pressekonferenz in Wien präsentiert wurde.

Unter Beibehaltung des aktuellen Emissionsniveaus wäre dieses Budget selbst im großzügigsten Fall in nicht einmal 20 Jahren ausgeschöpft. Ab 2035 dürften dann überhaupt keine Treibhausgase mehr ausgestoßen werden. „Selbst das maximale Budget ist nur ein Bruchteil dessen, was wir in der Vergangenheit im gleichen Zeitraum von drei Dekaden aufgebraucht haben. Mit diesem Budget auszukommen, erfordert daher tiefgreifende Änderungen in unserem Wirtschaftsstil. Ein solcher Weg kann nur durch eine umgehende Neuorientierung und politisches Handeln in allen Bereichen Wirklichkeit werden“, unterstreicht Karl Steininger die Wichtigkeit von raschen Weichenstellungen.
„Zudem gibt es gute Gründe, dass Österreich deutlich weniger als die 1 500 Millionen Tonnen CO2-Äquivalente nutzen sollte“, ergänzt Lukas Meyer. „Unter dem Aspekt der Klimagerechtigkeit gilt es auch die historischen Emissionen bei der Berechnung des Budgets zu berücksichtigen, und die waren in Österreich sehr hoch”, so Meyer.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
