Veronika Proschek vom Wegener Center der Uni Graz wurde mit dem GRAWE Award ausgezeichnet

Sie forscht seit 2008 am Wegener Center für Klima und Globalen Wandel der Uni Graz und war maßgeblich an der Entwicklung einer neuen Methode zur globalen Messung von Treibhausgasen beteiligt: Dr. Veronika Proschek ist eine junge, erfolgreiche Wissenschafterin und begeistert von dem, was sie tut. Für ihre Forschung zeichnete die Grazer Wechselseitige Versicherung die 36-jährige Physikerin am 4. November 2016, mit dem GRAWE Award im Bereich „Wissenschaft“ aus.

„Der Preis ist für mich eine Bestätigung, dass die Ergebnisse meiner Forschungen wertgeschätzt werden“, freut sich Veronika Proschek über die Verleihung des GRAWE Award. Die Klimaforschung ist der gebürtigen Salzburgerin nämlich nicht nur ein wissenschaftliches, sondern auch ein persönliches Anliegen. Dabei begann ihre wissenschaftliche Karriere in einem ganz anderen Bereich. Nach dem Studium der Technischen Physik an der TU Graz war die Diplomingenieurin zuerst in der Privatwirtschaft im Bereich der Motorenentwicklung tätig. „Meine Zukunft habe ich aber nicht in der Autoindustrie gesehen“, blickt Proschek zurück.

So ergriff sie die Initiative und bewarb sich am Wegener Center der Uni Graz – mit Erfolg. In der Arbeitsgruppe von Institutsleiter Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gottfried Kirchengast untersuchte sie dann im Rahmen ihrer Dissertation anhand von Computersimulationen, ob bzw. wie sich Treibhausgase in der Atmosphäre mit Hilfe von Mikrowellen- und Infrarotlaser-Signalen messen lassen. Sie war an der Entwicklung von Algorithmen beteiligt, die es ermöglichen, aus den Signalen der satellitengestützten Mikrowellen- und Infrarotlaser-Okkultation die Klimavariablen Temperatur, Druck, Feuchte und Wind sowie die Konzentration von Treibhausgasen abzuleiten. Die unter anderem von der Europäischen Weltraumagentur ESA geförderten Forschungen führten zu bahnbrechenden Erkenntnissen und Publikationen in international renommierten Fachjournalen. „Veronika Proschek hat eine hervorragende Dissertation gemacht und bringt auch weiterhin ihre Vielseitigkeit und Kompetenz zur Klimaforschung mittels Okkultationsmethoden äußerst wertvoll in unsere Gruppe und für die internationale Community ein“, unterstreicht ihr Mentor Gottfried Kirchengast.

In der Klimaforschung fand Veronika Proschek ihre Berufung – zumindest als Wissenschafterin. Privat ist sie glückliche Mutter eines zweijährigen Sohnes. Nach ihrer Babypause widmet sie sich seit Mai 2015 als Postdoc der Radio-Okkultation. Ebenso richtet sich zunächst ihr Fokus auf die technische Umsetzung der Mikrowellenokkultation. „Es macht mir viel Spaß, in einem produktiven Team immer wieder Neues zu entwickeln“, freut sich Proschek auf neue Herausforderungen.

Der GRAWE Award wird jährlich unter der Leitung von GRAWE-Ehrenpräsident Dr. Franz Harnoncourt-Unverzagt und einer unabhängigen Jury, bestehend aus Mag. Carina Kerschbaumer, Mitglied der Chefredaktion Kleine Zeitung, Mag. Günter Encic, Leitender Redakteur ORF Steiermark, GRAWE-Generaldirektor Dr. Othmar Ederer und Ursula Wipfler, Vorsitzende des GRAWE-Zentralbetriebsrates, verliehen.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
