Big questions at the end of life: How philosophy supports hospice care

Patrick Schuchter and his research team investigated philosophical practice in palliative care. Some of their findings will be presented at a conference at the University of Graz from 10 to 12 October.

Pain relief, palliative care, psychotherapy: dying people and their relatives receive comprehensive support and care. What they lack are answers to some of life's existential questions. Philosophical dialogues can be a great support in the personal confrontation with loss, death and grief. This is what Patrick Schuchter, who holds a degree in healthcare and nursing and a doctorate in philosophy, discovered in his research project. Some of the results will be presented at a conference from 10 to 12 October at the University of Graz.

Have I led a good life? What is really important? What comes after death? "Many people ask themselves questions like these on their deathbed," reports Schuchter from his experience. "Reflecting on this without expecting an answer opens up new perspectives, brings more clarity and closeness," the philosopher has observed as part of the project. Relatives, carers, nursing staff and doctors would also benefit from philosophical practice in everyday life. At the conference "Encounters in Ultimate Situations. Philosophical Practice and Palliative Care", participants will find out what formats and possibilities there are for this, how they can be integrated in hospitals, hospices or caring communities and what experiences professionals have already had with them.

The event is aimed at full-time and voluntary employees in the health and social care system, caring relatives, philosophical practitioners and researchers. Registration is possible until 15 September 2025.

Fair distribution: Researchers determine just greenhouse gas budgets for all EU regions

Ten years ago, on 12 December 2015, the Paris Climate Agreement was signed at the UN Climate Conference. In order to limit global warming to well below two degrees, only a certain amount of CO2 may be emitted worldwide. While the focus was originally on national emission targets, more than 200 subnational regions and almost 300 cities have now adopted their own targets. But how many emissions are they fairly entitled to? Researchers at the University of Graz have now developed transparent criteria for fair distribution at the subnational level for the first time and determined corresponding greenhouse gas budgets for all European regions. The paper was published today in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

At the beginning of December, the University of Graz transformed the theater into a laboratory: as part of “Chemical Life,” teacher training students staged a chemical Christmas show for Styrian school classes—complete with ethanol rockets, nitrogen snow, and glowing effects. An evening designed to inspire interest in studying chemistry.

Train by train: Koralm railway accelerates exchange between the Universities

Lectures at the University of Klagenfurt in the morning, seminars at the University of Graz in the afternoon: Austria's longest tunnel and a journey time of around 45 minutes make it easy. The Koralm railway increases the speed of networking between the two university locations. The collaboration builds on existing cooperation - for example in the areas of teacher training, Slavic studies and as employers, the universities are well coordinated.
