Universität Graz initiiert Sommerschule und Forschungskooperation zum Umweltrecht mit Pekinger Law School

Während bei uns Diesel-Fahrverbote vorerst abgesagt werden, der Flughafen Schwechat eine dritte Piste bekommt und auf den Autobahnen stellenweise stärker aufs Gas gestiegen werden darf, setzt China – das jüngst auch das Pariser Klimaschutzabkommen unterzeichnet hat – auf erneuerbare Energie. Die ForscherInnen des Landes sind den EU-ExpertInnen in Sachen Klimaschutzrecht um einen Schritt voraus. „Außerdem sieht sich die dortige Regierung bereits mit ersten Klagen von Umweltschutzorganisationen gegen drohende Klimafolgen konfrontiert“, berichtet Markus Scharler vom Institut für Öffentliches Recht und Politikwissenschaft. Die Grazer JuristInnen wollen in diesem brisanten Thema daher verstärkt mit chinesischen KollegInnen zusammenarbeiten. Ein dahingehendes Memorandum of Understanding mit der Renmin Law School in Peking werden Eva Schulev-Steindl und Christoph Bezemek noch im März unterzeichnen. Schon diesen Sommer profitieren auch REWI-Studierende der Universität Graz von der neuen Kooperation: Von 11. bis 23. Juli findet bei uns die erste Summer School zum Umweltrecht in der EU und China statt, eine Fortsetzung wird es 2020 in Peking geben. Für Uni-Graz-Studierende ist die Teilnahme kostenlos und kann als freies Wahlfach angerechnet werden. „Das ist eine hervorragende Möglichkeit, sich in ein in Zukunft immer wichtiger werdendes Fachgebiet zu vertiefen und gleichzeitig internationale Erfahrung zu sammeln“, betont Scharler. Die Anmeldung ist bis 31. März möglich.

In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
