Einzigartigkeit ist Trumpf

Der renommierte Kultursoziologe Andreas Reckwitz sprach an der Uni Graz über SiegerInnen und VerliererInnen in einer „Gesellschaft der Singularitäten“

Auf Einladung des Zentrums für Kulturwissenschaften stellte der renommierte Kultursoziologe Dr. Andreas Reckwitz, Professor an der Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder, am 9. November 2017 an der Uni Graz sein neues und viel beachtetes Buch „Die Gesellschaft der Singularitäten. Zum Strukturwandel der Moderne“ vor.

In seinem Vortrag diskutierte Reckwitz die Besonderheit unserer Gesellschaft, sich am Einzigartigen und Singulären zu orientieren und damit eine eigene Logik des Sozialen entwickelt zu haben: Das Besondere ist Trumpf, das Einzigartige wird prämiert, eher reizlos ist das Allgemeine und Standardisierte. Der Durchschnittsmensch mit seinem Durchschnittsleben gerät damit unter Konformitätsverdacht. Denn das neue Maß der Dinge sind die authentischen Subjekte mit originellen Interessen und ausgefeilter Biografie, aber auch die unverwechselbaren Güter, Events, Communities und Städte.
Andreas Reckwitz legte dar, wie diese Prozesse von der postindustriellen Ökonomie und digitalen Technologie getragen werden und wie sie sich auf die Lebensstile und Klassen sowie auf die Politik auswirken und dort neue Muster der Entwertung und Polarisierung hervorbringen.
Mit dem Anspruch einer Theorie der Moderne zeigt er in seinem Buch, welch widersprüchliche Dynamik dieser Prozess aufweist und worin seine Kehrseite besteht. Die Gesellschaft der Singularitäten kennt nämlich nicht nur strahlende Sieger, so die These, sie produziert auch ihre ganz eigenen Ungleichheiten, Paradoxien und Verlierer.
 
Prof. Reckwitz ist auch Gastwissenschafter der diesjährigen Ausgabe von „Ein Workshop mit ...“ des Zentrums für Kulturwissenschaften der Uni Graz.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
