Festveranstaltung zum 70er von Johannes W. Pichler, ehemaliger Universitätsprofessor für Europäische Rechtsentwicklung

Ein großartiger akademischer Lehrer, der das Feuer für Europa bei KollegInnen und Studierenden entfacht hat: Em.O.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Johannes W. Pichler wurde zwar vor zwei Jahren an der Uni Graz emeritiert, ist aber nach wie vor ein geschätzter Pionier der europäischen Idee und allseits bekannt als „großer Europäer“. Dies bestätigte auch die überaus prominente Gästeschar, die anlässlich des 70. Geburtstages des Wissenschafters zur Festveranstaltung am 7. Juli 2017 ins RESOWI-Zentrum gekommen war.
Unter den GratulantInnen befanden sich Mag. Christopher Drexler, Landesrat für Kultur, Gesundheit, Pflege und Personal, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Günther Burkert, Ministerialrat im Wissenschaftsministerium, Heinrich Neisser, Nationalratspräsident a.D., sowie Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin Polaschek, Vizerektor für Studium und Lehre.

Die Laudatio hielt via Telefon Prof. Dr. Klemens F. Fischer, Gesandter der Ständigen Vertretung Österreichs bei der EU in Brüssel. Festvorträge steuerten Mag. Othmar Karas, Vizepräsident des Europäischen Parlaments a.D. und Leiter EU-Russland Delegation in Brüssel, sowie Em.Prof. Dr. Thomas Würtenberger von der Universität Freiburg bei.
Neben dem Strauß an Glückwünschen und einer anregenden Diskussion mit Science Buster Dr. Elisabeth Oberzaucher – moderiert von Kurier-Redakteurin Dr. Elisabeth Holzer – erhielt der Jubilar die Festschrift für das „zóon europaion“, herausgegeben von Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Anita Ziegerhofer, Assoz. Prof. Dr. Sascha Ferz und Vizerektor Martin Polaschek.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
