WissenschafterInnen geben das „Steirische Jahrbuch für Politik“ heraus

Für viele ist es ein Seismograf des heimischen politischen Geschehens – das „Steirische Jahrbuch für Politik“, das seit dem Jahr 2000 regelmäßig im Frühjahr erscheint, mit wechselnden HerausgeberInnen. An der kürzlich veröffentlichten 18. Ausgabe wirkten zahlreiche WissenschafterInnen der Universität Graz mit: Rechtswissenschafterin Beatrix Karl, Politikwissenschafter Wolfgang Mantl, Politologe Klaus Poier, Soziologe Manfred Prisching und Historikerin Anita Ziegerhofer.

„Wir HerausgeberInnen legen großen wissenschaftlichen Wert darauf, dass mit dem Steirischen Jahrbuch für Politik eine umfassende und vor allem auch pluralistische Darstellung der wesentlichen Entwicklungen der Politik und Gesellschaft in der Steiermark geboten werden kann“, bekräftigte Klaus Poier bei der Präsentation vor wenigen Tagen, bei der sowohl Bundespräsident Alexander Van der Bellen als auch Landeshauptmann Hermann Schützenhöfer zu Gast waren. Ermöglicht werden solle dies durch eine Kombination einerseits von Beiträgen der AkteurInnen und VerantwortungsträgerInnen aller relevanten Parteien, Gruppierungen und Institutionen, die authentisch aus ihrer eigenen Sicht Einschätzungen, Ziele und Motive festhalten, und andererseits von zeitnahen, kontextbezogenen Kommentierungen und wissenschaftlichen Analysen, die einen vertieften Einblick bieten.

„Wir sind stolz darauf, dass es sich als Standardwerk der Dokumentation und Analyse des steirischen Zeitgeschehens etablieren konnte, immer eingebettet in den größeren österreichischen, europäischen und internationalen Zusammenhang“, schilderte Poier. Zeitgeschehen, so der Mitherausgeber, umfasse die Gesellschaft allgemein, Wirtschaft und Arbeitswelt, Wissenschaft und Bildung, Kunst und Kultur, Religion, Sport und vieles, was die Menschen bewege und die Entwicklung des Landes präge.

The University of Graz is further expanding its international study opportunities through the European university alliance Arqus and is taking the lead in two key projects. In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
