Universität Graz nimmt unter die Lupe, wie es um die Demokratie in Österreich bestellt ist

Die Gesellschaft verändert sich, wandelt sich dadurch auch die Demokratie? Wie kann sie sich angesichts dieser Umbrüche weiterentwickeln? Welche Voraussetzungen braucht es dafür? Das erforscht das Austrian Democracy Lab (ADL), an dem unter der Leitung der Donau-Universität Krems die Universität Graz beteiligt ist.

Halbjährliche Bevölkerungsumfrage: das Demokratieradar

Im Mittelpunkt des ADL steht eine umfangreiche Bevölkerungsumfrage – das sogenannte Demokratieradar, mit dem halbjährlich die Sichtweisen und Haltungen der ÖsterreicherInnen zu Demokratie und dem politischen System hierzulande erhoben werden. Zwei PolitikwissenschafterInnen betreuen das für fünf Jahre anberaumte Projekt an der Universität Graz. Ein konstanter Teil dieses Demokratieradars soll Entwicklungen etwa der Zustimmung zur Demokratie oder zu politischen Institutionen im Zeitverlauf darstellen. Zusätzlich widmen sich jeweils Schwerpunktfragen einem aktuellen Thema. Erste Ergebnisse werden im Herbst 2018 präsentiert.
Darüber hinaus arbeitet das Austrian Democracy Lab laufend an Ideenpapieren zu Reformen des politischen Systems, in die die Ergebnisse des Demokratieradars ebenfalls einfließen. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei Überlegungen zu den Bereichen Föderalismus, Direkte Demokratie/Partizipation und Wahlrecht.

Building a relationship on a solid foundation is also important in chemistry. To produce medicines, disinfectants or plant protection products, stable bonds between carbon atoms must be formed. Conventional chemical methods rely on environmentally harmful reagents and solvents to carry out the desired reaction. This process also produces unusable by-products. Chemist Lilla Gal has discovered an enzyme that enables the same process to take place efficiently and sustainably. The results of her research were recently published in the prestigious journal Angewandte Chemie.
