Pole position for studying: University of Graz invites you to the Welcome Weeks in September

Off to university, get set, go - that's the motto from 1 September 2025 as the University of Graz welcomes its first-year students with a varied programme. The "Welcome Weeks" help them to get started in the often still unfamiliar campus life and prepare them for the start of the semester on 1 October. In addition to lots of information about the lecture hall, library and courses, there is also sport, cinema and a games evening.

Online sessions

How do I register for a course? How can I use AI? And how do I get student financial aid? These and many other questions will be answered in numerous online sessions in the first half of September. >> find out more
Pre-registration is not necessary, just click in and find out. "Up to 200 beginners take part in each session," says Julia Huemer from the 4students study information service, confirming the high level of interest.
The University of Graz is also supporting international beginners on English-language Master's programmes with its own events this year. "In particular, NAWI Graz programmes such as Data Science are increasingly in demand from students from South East Europe and India," explains Julia Taucher from the Welcome Centre.

Campus programme

The programme will take place on the University of Graz campus from 23 September. Guided tours, taster language courses and on-site IT services will prepare students for the courses starting on 1 October. >> learn more

In addition, the individual degree programmes welcome their new students with welcome events. Lecturers will answer subject-specific questions about the programme - from English Studies to Molecular Biology and Environmental Systems Science.

On 24 and 30 September, Rector Peter Riedler and his team invite you to an information brunch in the auditorium. In addition to culinary snacks, there will be plenty of information for a successful start to your studies. "We are looking forward to welcoming the new students, who can choose from a wide range of options at the University of Graz," emphasises Rector Riedler. And he reveals: "At the welcome ceremony, participants receive a water bottle in the University of Graz design."
There are opportunities to get to know the new students at this and many other events: at the table tennis tournament and the freshers' party on 25 September as well as at the games evening. "There were 400 last year," says Huemer, looking forward to a new edition on 24 September in the assembly hall.

Cinema in the courtyard

You can also get a taste of campus life from 1 to 12 September 2025 (Mondays to Fridays), when the inner courtyard of the main building of the University of Graz will be transformed into an atmospheric cinema. After blockbusters such as Top Gun: Maverick and Fack Ju Göthe in the first week of September, three films will be directed by scientists in the second week. They take an expert look at Conclave, Gladiator II and The day after tomorrow: What is fiction? What is fact? Tickets and programme at https://campus-kino.uni-graz.at/de/

Fair distribution: Researchers determine just greenhouse gas budgets for all EU regions

Ten years ago, on 12 December 2015, the Paris Climate Agreement was signed at the UN Climate Conference. In order to limit global warming to well below two degrees, only a certain amount of CO2 may be emitted worldwide. While the focus was originally on national emission targets, more than 200 subnational regions and almost 300 cities have now adopted their own targets. But how many emissions are they fairly entitled to? Researchers at the University of Graz have now developed transparent criteria for fair distribution at the subnational level for the first time and determined corresponding greenhouse gas budgets for all European regions. The paper was published today in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
