Due to the high number of infections the colour of the corona traffic light remains red. That means: Classes and course are to be held in distance except for laboratory, excursions and practical exercises. But distance isn’t what a university is about, confirms Rector Martin Polaschek. Therefore the question to him: Will vaccinations restore the vibrancy of campus dialogue?

“We are all fed up with the current situation. An empty campus just doesn’t feel right for a university. I think we’re all looking forward to the point when we can return to the university campus. However, a return on the scale that we are used to will only be possible if we can feel confident that we won’t infect those around us, or get infected ourselves. Wearing face coverings will help to some extent. But vaccinations will be a crucial step for all concerned.
There is already public debate about whether and to what extent people who have been vaccinated should have more freedom to participate actively in society and community life. The university will have to tackle this question too. Because universities are not virtual institutions – they depend on face-to-face interaction. We thrive on the lively dialogue that goes on between researchers, teaching staff and students. That’s why vaccinations will be a hugely important factor so we can soon return to a campus that is as vibrant as possible.”
