Historische Chance für die Uni Graz: Vorklinik wird zum Haus der Sprachen und Kulturen

„Der Ausbau des Campus der Medizinischen Universität Graz ist ein wichtiger Schritt für den Wissenschaftsstandort“, betont Uni-Graz-Rektorin Christa Neuper. Gleichzeitig eröffnet diese Erweiterung neue Perspektiven für die Karl-Franzens-Universität. Mehrere von der Med Uni Graz genutzte Gebäude – Vorklinik (Harrachgasse 21), Universitätsplatz 4 sowie Heinrichstraße 31 – werden in naher Zukunft zur Verfügung stehen. „Eine historische Chance“, unterstreicht Neuper die einmalige Gelegenheit, zusammenhängende Fachbereiche und Schwerpunkte räumlich zusammenzuführen sowie vorhandene Infrastruktur zu nutzen.

Die Abstimmung zwischen Med Uni Graz und Uni Graz läuft im Projekt Campus-Entwicklung bereits auf Hochtouren. Das Herzstück bildet die Vorklinik mit einer Gesamtnutzfläche von etwa 10 000 Quadratmetern, diese soll zu einem „Haus der Sprachen und Kulturen“ werden und alle Sprachinstitute der Uni Graz – derzeit auf mehrere Standorte, vor allem im rund einen Kilometer entfernten Wall-Gebäude, verteilt – unter einem Dach vereinen.

Peter Riedler, Vizerektor für Finanzen, Ressourcen und Standortentwicklung: „Rund ein Sechstel aller Flächen am Universitätsgelände können in naher Zukunft neu ausgerichtet werden und fachlich verknüpfte Bereiche näher zusammenrücken. Neben dem Gewinn von Synergien steht vor allem die verbesserte Sichtbarkeit der Themen und engere Vernetzung der WissenschafterInnen und Studierenden im Mittelpunkt. Mit diesem wichtigen Projekt und gemeinsam mit der neuen Bibliothek sowie dem Zentrum für Wissens- und Innovationstransfer entsteht ein moderner Campus in zentraler Innenstadtlage, einzigartig in Österreich.“

Die weiteren Planungen laufen in enger Abstimmung mit der Eigentümerin, der Bundes-Immobilien-Gesellschaft, sowie den nachnutzenden Einrichtungen, so dass nach dem Auszug der Med Uni mit Modul 2 im Jahr 2022 die Generalsanierung des Vorklinik-Gebäudes starten und nach etwa zwei bis drei Jahren die Institute der Uni Graz einziehen könnten.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
