Das Messprinzip der Radio-Okkultation

Internationale Elite der Atmosphären- und Klimaforschung trifft sich auf Schloss Seggau

Moderne, satellitengestützte Methoden zur Fernerkundung der Atmosphäre und des Klimasystems stehen im Fokus eines internationalen Workshops von 5. bis 11. September 2013 auf Schloss Seggau. Die von einem Team des Wegener Center für Klima und Globalen Wandel der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz organisierte Veranstaltung versammelt 75 führende WissenschafterInnen aus 20 Nationen in der Südsteiermark.

 

Die Vortragenden und TeilnehmerInnen des Workshops befassen sich mit verschiedenen Aspekten und neuesten Erkenntnissen sowie Herausforderungen rund um die sogenannte Okkultationstechnik zur Erforschung von Atmosphäre und Klima. Die Veranstaltung führt die Arbeitsbereiche OPAC (Occultations for Probing Atmosphere and Climate) und IROWG (International Radio Occultation Working Group) zusammen.

Die Okkultationstechnik stützt sich auf Signale von globalen Navigationssatelliten (GPS, Galileo) oder Low Earth Orbit (LEO)-Satelliten. Die Satellitendaten werden zusammen mit Klimamodell-Simulationen zum Studium von Klimavariabilität und Klimatrends eingesetzt.

 

WissenschafterInnen des Grazer Wegener Center, allen voran Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gottfried Kirchengast, Assoz. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Foelsche und Priv.-Doz. Dr. Andrea Steiner, zählen bei der Erforschung von Klimafragen mittels Okkultationstechnik zur Weltspitze. So ist es auch kein Zufall, dass der Workshop von OPAC bereits zum fünften Mal und von der IROWG schon zum zweiten Mal in der Steiermark stattfindet.
