Klimaforscher Gottfried Kirchengast wurde Honorarprofessur am National Space Science Center der Chinesischen Akademie der Wissenschaften verliehen

Sie ist eine große Ehre und eröffnet zugleich neue Möglichkeiten in der Forschungszusammenarbeit mit China: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gottfried Kirchengast, Leiter des Wegener Center für Klima und Globalen Wandel der Uni Graz, wurde am 16. August 2017 in Peking eine Honorarprofessur auf Lebenszeit am National Space Science Center (NSSC) der Chinesischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (CAS – Chinese Academy of Sciences) verliehen. NSSC-Direktor Prof. Wu Ji überreichte die Auszeichnung an den steirischen Wissenschafter, der international zu den führenden ForscherInnen auf dem Gebiet der auf Satelliten basierenden Okkultationsmethoden zur globalen Klimabeobachtung zählt.

Formell ist Kirchengast bereits seit Dezember 2016 Honorarprofessor am NSSC/CAS, wodurch ihm auch budget- und personalwirksame Aktivitäten an dieser Forschungseinrichtung möglich wurden. Er übernahm die wissenschaftliche Leitung und gemeinsam mit NSSC-Kollegin Prof. Sun Yueqiang die operative Leitung des neu gegründeten Joint Laboratory on Occultations for Atmosphere and Climate, das die Uni Graz gemeinsam mit dem NSSC eingerichtet hat.

Das NSSC wird die Instrumente für die erste Satellitenmission zum Klima-Monitoring mit Mikrowellen-Okkultation bauen und ist Schlüsselpartner für den Zugang zu Daten der GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System)-Radio-Okkultation aus China. Diese leisten jetzt schon zusammen mit Daten aus Europa und den USA einen wertvollen Beitrag zum Monitoring des Klimawandels.

“HeinrichBiCool”: University of Graz demonstrates the effects of green facades and roofs

The University of Graz has launched a pioneering project at the University Centre for Theology. Its name, “HeinrichBiCool”, says it all: a comprehensive system of green facades and roof will cool the building at Heinrichstraße 80 during the summer. At the same time, this will create a new habitat for plants and animals, helping to increase biodiversity. The accompanying monitoring programme will provide detailed data on the impact of the measures on indoor climate, energy consumption and biodiversity. The findings will lay a scientifically sound foundation for further projects aimed at making cities sustainable, climate-resilient and liveable. The partners in this project, funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), are AEE INTEC – Institute for Sustainable Technologies, Technisches Büro Siegfried Stark, the landscape architecture and urban planning firm “studio boden”, and Ökoteam Graz.
