Der hessische Finanzminister Thomas Schäfer zu Gast an der Uni Graz. Vortrag zum Thema die „EU als Transferunion“

Es ist fast auf den Tag genau ein Jahr her, dass die Universität Graz und die Goethe-Universität Frankfurt einen Kooperationsvertrag abgeschlossen haben. Inhalt des Papiers, das im Büro des damaligen Forschungslandesrates Christopher Drexler von Vizerektor Peter Riedler und von Uni-Frankfurt-Vizepräsident Manfred Schubert-Zsilavecz unterfertigt wurde, ist vor allem die Unterstützung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses aus dem Bereich der Wirtschaftswissenschaften im Fachgebiet Accounting. Im Vordergrund stehen der gegenseitige Austausch von JungwissenschafterInnen aus dem Grazer Doktoratsprogramm „DART – Doctoral Program in Accounting, Reporting and Taxation“ einerseits und der „Schwerpunkt Rechnungswesen“ der Goethe-Universität andererseits in Form von gemeinsamen Konferenzen, Projekten und Workshops.

Im Rahmen dieser Partnerschaft besuchte am 22. Jänner 2018 der hessische Finanzminister Thomas Schäfer die Universität Graz. Hessen, wo auch die europäische Finanzmetropole Frankfurt am Main liegt, ist im Herzen Deutschlands. Schäfer, der derzeit einen offiziellen politischen Besuch in der Steiermark absolviert, kam auf Einladung der des Rektorates und der SOWI-Fakultät an die Uni Graz. Begrüßt wurde er von Vizerektor Peter Riedler, Dekan Thomas Foscht und Rainer Niemann, Leiter des Instituts für Unternehmensrechnung und Steuerlehre.

„Die EU als Transferunion?“ – mit diesem aktuellen Schlagwort beleuchtete Schäfer in seinem Vortrag das derzeitige politische Gerempel um den Ausstieg Großbritanniens aus der Europäischen Union (BREXIT) und ging natürlich auch auf die möglichen finanziellen Konsequenzen dieser Bewegung ein. Das Publikum, das sowohl aus WissenschafterInnen der Fakultät als auch aus wissbegierigen Studierenden bestand, diskutierte im Anschluss mit dem Gast.

The University of Graz is further expanding its international study opportunities through the European university alliance Arqus and is taking the lead in two key projects. In future, students will benefit from even more joint degree programmes and from simplified recognition of academic achievements through the Joint European Degree Label.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
