Chemikerinnen der Uni Graz ermöglichen Einsatz von Kohlendioxid für nachhaltige Produktion

Ob Plastik oder Pillen, Kosmetik oder Kunstfasern: Die Industrie benötigt für ihre Herstellung nach wie vor große Mengen an Erdöl. Zwei Wissenschafterinnen der Uni Graz haben nun eine umweltfreundliche Methode entwickelt, die als Kohlenstoffquelle das Treibhausgas CO2 anstatt der nicht erneuerbaren fossilen Stoffe verwendet. Die Forschungsergebnisse wurden in der heute erschienenen Druckausgabe des Fachjournals Angewandte Chemie veröffentlicht.

Mit einem internationalen Team haben Dr. Tea Pavkov-Keller vom Institut für Molekulare Biowissenschaften und Dr. Silvia Glück-Harter vom Institut für Chemie der Uni Graz Enzyme gefunden, die für die so genannte Biokatalyse eingesetzt werden können. Dieses Verfahren nutzt solche Substanzen aus der Natur anstatt giftiger Chemikalien. Die Wissenschafterinnen haben die Strukturen mittels Kristallografie und Kryo-Elektronenmikroskopie entschlüsselt und die Wirkungsweise der neuen Hilfsstoffe erforscht. „Diese Biokatalysatoren benötigen einen erst kürzlich entdeckten Cofaktor, um das Kohlendioxid an einer bestimmten Stelle von aromatischen Verbindungen zu fixieren“, beschreibt Glück-Harter. So kann das Treibhausgas CO2 gewissenermaßen recycelt und für die klimaschonende Produktion eingesetzt werden.
Die Forschungen wurden vom Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds FWF sowie vom Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (acib) unterstützt.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
