Seit Jahren sorgt der menschgemachte Klimawandel weltweit für einen dramatischen Rückgang der Gletscher. Die letzten zehn Jahre brachten allerdings nicht nur immer schnelleres Gletscherschmelzen hervor, vermehrt wurden auch Abbrüche großer Teile mächtiger Gebirgsgletscher beobachtet. Im Jahr 2016 forderten zwei solche Abbrüche in Tibet das Leben mehrerer Hirten und ihrer Tiere. In Alaska, Asien, und Südamerika wurden in der gleichen Zeit ähnliche Prozesse dokumentiert. Die Katastrophe an der Marmolata im Sommer 2022 hat zudem gut illustriert, wie schlecht wir solch zerstörerischen Prozesse verstehen, und wie weit wir davon entfernt sind, sie vorhersagen zu können. In diesem Vortrag werfen wir einen Blick auf den neusten Stand der Forschung um zu verstehen, ob und wie der Klimawandel an Gletscherabbrüchen beteiligt ist.
