Die homerischen Epen, so soll der Vortrag zeigen, haben einen bemerkenswerten Beitrag zum intellektuellen Haushalt der griechischen Kultur geliefert. Indem sie in einer durchaus artifiziellen ‚Reinform‘ zwei diametral entgegengesetzte Weltverständnisse narrativ explizieren, eines, das den Menschen in einer von den Göttern garantierten gerechten Welt zeigt (Odyssee), und eines, das den Menschen Schicksal und Launen unberechenbarer Götter ausgesetzt entwirft (Ilias), stellen sie einerseits Modelle zur Bewältigung jedweder Lebenssituation bereit. Andererseits bietet die Widerstrebigkeit der Modelle eine erhebliche intellektuelle Herausforderung, auf die die griechische Literatur und Philosophie über Jahrhunderte hinweg produktiv antwortete und mit verschiedenen Strategien auf die Widerstrebigkeit reagiert. Die kanonische Stellung von Ilias und Odyssee sorgte für eben diese Jahrhunderte dafür, dass beide Formen von Weltdeutung permanent präsent blieben.
