Im österreichischen Teil der Monarchie waren im 19. Jahrhundert zwei für damalige Verhältnisse gut vernetzte Botaniker tätig, die sich intensiv mit fossilen Pflanzenresten beschäftigten. Franz Unger (1800–1870), Professor für Pflanzenphysiologie an der Universität Wien und Constantin von Ettingshausen (1826–1897), Professor für spezielle Botanik und Phytopaläontologie an der Universität Graz und ihre Forschungen werden in diesem Vortrag näher vorgestellt.
