Through education and our own insight, we usually know which values we should be guided by, what is good and bad, right and wrong. Nevertheless, we don’t always act accordingly. For example, we take the car instead of the climate-friendly train because it is more comfortable and gives us a feeling of independence. Ralf Lutz is interested in the psychological side of ethics. ‘Emotions have a significant influence on our decisions,’ says the theologian and psychologist. ‘In addition to our intellect, we also need feelings in order to learn and implement morals,’ he is convinced and gives an example: ‘Only if a child feels it is unfair to exclude someone from the class community will they also counteract exclusion later on.’
