Prominentes Podium diskutierte über nachhaltige Mode

Die Modeszene hetzt atemlos über den Laufsteg. Je günstiger, desto gefragter. Doch es gibt Gegenwind: Nachhaltigkeit und Qualität sind die Leitlinien eines Trends, der den Weg der Langsamkeit geht. Auf diese Spuren begab sich am 20. November 2014 eine prominent besetzte Podiumsdiskussion in der gut besuchten Aula der Uni Graz – „um einen Denkanstoß zu geben“, begründete Vizerektorin Renate Dworczak in der Begrüßung.

„Wir sind dem klassischen Wirtschaftssystem sehr verhaftet, grüne Mode spielt noch eine kleine Rolle“, so Rupert Baumgartner, Forshcer für Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement an der Uni Graz. Der Anteil an KonsumentInnen, die nachhaltige Mode kaufen, wird auf fünf bis acht Prozent geschätzt. Auch wenn ein Drittel Affinität dazu habe, sei der Preis, so Baumgartner, ein entscheidendes Kriterium. Dies bestätigte auch der Grazer Designer Christian Kastner, der unter dem Label Palo-Alto Kleidung herstellt: „Die Frage ist, wie viel Hosen braucht der Mensch tatsächlich? Die Konsumgesellschaft will leider immer mehr.“
Von Podiumsgast Brigitte Hirner, Store-Leiterin „Göttin des Glücks“ in Graz, wollte Moderatorin Bettina Zajac (ORF Steiermark) wissen, ob man mit fairem Handel überleben könne? „Es hängt viel von persönlichen Einstellung ab“, so Hirner. Mittlerweile ist „Göttin des Glücks“ fünf Mal Österreich vertreten, das erfordere auch Investitionen.
Gerhard Adam, Protagonist der Clean Clothes-Kampagne, brachte unter anderem die Arbeitssituation in Kambodscha in die Diskussion ein: „Ein Viertel der etwa 500.000 Näherinnen ist unternährt, was sich in Massen-Ohnmachtsanfällen auswirkt.“ Made in Europe sei jedoch nicht immer besser, da die Produktionsbedingungen in einigen Ländern sehr schlecht seien. Der vietnamesisch-österreichische Modeschöpfer La Hong sprach sich dagegen aus, dass Modeketten bis zu 18 Kollektionen pro Jahr herausbringen, und appellierte an einen fairen Umgang mit MitarbeiterInnen: „Nach arbeitsintensiven Wochen machen wir ein paar Tage länger frei.“

Nachhaltigkeit wurde im Anschluss an die Podiumsdiskussion praktiziert. Insgesamt 180 kg gebrauchte, gut erhaltene Kleidung wurden an der Uni Graz abgegeben und konnten getauscht oder gekauft werden. Übrig gebliebene Kleidung wird an wohltätige Einrichtungen gespendet.

Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der 7. fakultät, des Zentrums für Gesellschaft, Wissen und Kommunikation der Uni Graz, und wurde von der Bank Austria unterstützt.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
