Leistungsvereinbarung für die Jahre 2016–2018 abgeschlossen

Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen!

Das Rektorat hat mit dem Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Wirtschaft erfolgreich die Leistungsvereinbarung für die Jahre 2016–2018 abgeschlossen und damit eine solide finanzielle Basis geschaffen, um unsere Universität gut weiterzuentwickeln. Der Universitätsrat hat diesem Verhandlungsergebnis zugestimmt.
Der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz steht ein Globalbudget für drei Jahre in der Höhe von insgesamt 537,2 Millionen Euro zur Verfügung. Damit verzeichnet die Universität Graz ein leichtes Budgetplus, das es ermöglicht, die Kostensteigerungen abzudecken und gleichzeitig Impulse in Forschung und Lehre zu setzen. Erfreulich ist, dass viele strategische Projekte der Leistungsvereinbarungsperiode 2013–2016 sich auch nach Ansicht des Ministeriums sehr bewährt haben und nun in das sogenannte Grundbudget übernommen werden konnten. Demnach werden die Nachwuchsförderung und Profilbildung sowie Projekte, wie zum Beispiel NAWI Graz und BioTechMed-Graz, fortgeführt und für die Zukunft gesichert.
Einige neue Vorhaben können ebenfalls gestartet werden und unterstützen die Schwerpunktsetzungen unserer Universität. Drei strategische Projekte – Welcome Center, Doctoral Academy und „societal impact“ – stehen hierbei besonders im Fokus und bilden den Ausgangspunkt für weitere Maßnahmen.

Ich freue mich, mit allen Gremien und MitarbeiterInnen die geplanten Projekte umzusetzen und Forschung und Lehre an der Karl-Franzens-Universität positiv weiterzuentwickeln.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
