Physiker Gerhard Rath erhält den Roman-Ulrich-Sexl-Preis

Wie packt man komplexe Formeln und Phänomene der Physik in einen spannenden Unterricht? Wie holt man den SchülerInnen die Sterne vom Himmel? Und wie bringt man LehrerInnen dazu, den Begeisterungsfunken für das Fach überspringen zu lassen? Gerhard Rath, Fachdidaktiker für Physik an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz und Lehrer am BRG Kepler, weiß es. Für seine Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Vermittlung von Physik wird er am 1. September 2015 mit dem Roman-Ulrich-Sexl-Preis der Österreichsichen Physikalischen Gesellschaft ausgezeichnet.


Rath hat sich in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten auf verschiedenen Ebenen um den Physik-Unterricht verdient gemacht. Er ist Gründungsmitglied des Regionalen Fachdidaktikzentrums für Physik, über die Aktion IMST (Innovationen Machen Schule Top) in die Fortbildung von LehrerInnen involviert und hat auch maßgeblich an der PädagogInnenbildung NEU mitgearbeitet, die ab Herbst in Kraft tritt. Am BRG Kepler Graz hat er den Schulschwerpunkt SCIENCE mit aufgebaut, ein Museum für Johannes Kepler und die Schulsternwarte initiierte. Die Mitarbeit an zahlreichen Projekten hat der Schule und ihm schon einige Preise beschert, zum Beispiel den Gewinn der Faszination Technik Challenge oder des ESA-XMM Wettbewerbs, in dessen Rahmen eine ganze Schulklasse nach Kourou (Französisch Guyana) eingeladen wurde.


Der Roman Ulrich-Sexl-Preis wurde Rath vor allem aus zwei Gründen zugesprochen: für die beispielgebende Vernetzung zwischen Theorie und Praxis und die Umsetzung aktueller Entwicklungen in der Vermittlung auf allen Ebenen, der er sich immer wieder stellt. So wird sein Preisträgervortrag vom Einsatz von Smartphones im Physikunterricht handeln, seinem neuesten Arbeitsfeld, in dem er schon einige Publikationen und Fortbildungen getätigt hat.

Rescue and risks: Researchers have surveyed public perceptions of AI

The use of artificial intelligence has had to be made transparent since 2 August 2026. The EU’s AI Act, which has been in force since then, also sets out how risky an application is and which security measures apply as a result. However, the assessment of risks by the legislation differs in some cases significantly from the perceptions of the Austrian public. This is the finding of a representative study carried out by data scientist Stefan Thalmann from the University of Graz and his team.

The Healing Sea: Researchers discover new approaches to treating chronic inflammation in sponges

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
