Uni Graz fördert fünf „außergewöhnliche“ Forschungsprojekte in der Gesamthöhe von 1,8 Millionen Euro

Außergewöhnliche Fragestellungen, nicht alltägliche Zugänge und wenig behandelte Themen – „unkonventionelle Forschung“ ist im Rahmen der gleichnamigen Initiative der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz gefragt. „Auf Basis der Leistungsvereinbarung 2013–15 mit dem Wissenschaftsministerium und mit Unterstützung des Landes Steiermark werden fünf Projekte mit insgesamt mehr als 1,8 Millionen Euro gefördert“, erklärt Peter Scherrer, Vizerektor für Forschung und Nachwuchsförderung. Eine ExpertInnen-Jury hat aus den mehr als 80 eingereichten Vorhaben, die außerhalb der sieben gesamtuniversitären Forschungsschwerpunkte durchgeführt werden, fünf ausgewählt. Die Projekte werden für die Dauer von drei Jahren jeweils mit maximal 500.000 Euro, etwa 90 Prozent der beantragten Summe gefördert.

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in many diseases, ranging from metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases to tissue damage following injuries or infections. “Normally, the body is able to resolve inflammation on its own. If this process becomes unbalanced, immune cells remain permanently active and continue to drive negative changes in the tissue,” explains Andreas Koeberle, a pharmacist at the University of Graz.
